EXPLAINED - Energy Efficient Windows & Doors

We are often asked, “are the windows & doors you fit energy efficient and what does it mean for me?”

In short, YES they are.

The term used to describe how “energy efficient” windows and doors are is a Window Energy Rating, or “WER” for short. The WER rating is calculated using a combination of 3 key performance.

.

  1. U Value, “Thermal Transmittance” – This is a measurement of how well your windows and doors retain heat. The lower the U value, the lower the amount of heat loss, therefore meaning a warmer home.

  2. L Value, “Effective Air Leakage” – This is essentially a draught rating, so is a measure of how air tight your windows and doors are. The lower the value, the less draughty your windows and doors are.

  3. G Factor, “Solar” – This rate’s how well your windows harness the natural heat from the sunshine. Shown as a number between 0 and 1, the lower the number, the worse the performance of the windows and doors at capturing the suns warmth.

WER ratings are shown below, ranging from the worst performing (G) to the most energy efficient (A+)

As standard we fit A rated windows and doors, which is considered to be an excellent compromise of initial cost against the savings and benefits you will receive in the long term. However, for the most environmentally friendly of clients, we can upgrade your installation to A+ rated should you wish to.

So, “what are the benefits of A or A+ rated windows & doors?”

  • Save money – it is said a standard sized 4 bedroom detached house may save over £600 a year by upgrading to A rated windows & doors from single glazed units. If gas & electric prices continue to sky rocket, annual savings of well over £1,000 could be experienced

  • Save the planet – Ok, so you alone will not save the planet by installing energy efficient windows, but in doing so you may reduce your homes carbon emissions by 1200kgs annually. Remember, every little bit helps

  • A comfier home – Less draughts, less cold spots

  • Peace & quiet – Modern double glazing also helps to insulate your home from external noise

  • Kerb Appeal – Modern windows and doors, which are available in many styles and colours, can really “Enhance your Home”

  • Property value – Up to date windows and doors can add value to your home, above and beyond the actual cost of having the work done, a WIN WIN for sure !!!

Over an extended period of time, energy efficient windows and doors will pay for themselves, reduce your carbon footprint, provide you with a more comfortable, better looking and more valuable home.
